Sad Multiple surgeries
I started having problems with my hands in 2005. I had carpel tunnel in both hands. I ended up having surgery Feb 2006 & May 2006. I have had problems gripping, holding on to things etc. I was off of work for both surgeries and was still not doing well enough to go back to work. I was then sent to work hardening. It was supposed to help me so that I can return to work. While doing work hardening I developed pain in my elbow and upper extremities. I reported the problem to the Dr. He suggested I go see a Pain Specialist. Well the insurance company disagreed and would not authorized treatment. I ended up getting an attorney in Sept 2006. Months went by of hearing trying to get medical treatment. Finally Dec 2006 I has seen by a Dr who speciallizes in Neck and Spine. He sent me to therapy for 8 weeks cause I started have severe muscle spasms and barely could put pressure on either elbow. After all that I had to have 2 more surgeries. Ulner nerve surgery on both elbows in 2007. The pain in my neck went away until DEC 2007. I developed a huge muscle spasm in the left side of my neck and could not extend my left arm. Once again the insurance company did not want to pay for treatment and it happened while at work. I have had to get treatment from my own doctor and using my own insurance while my attorney is battling with the insurance company. Now I have been told I have a pinched nerve in my neck, due to arthritis. I have had another EMG and Nerve study to learn this new information out. Oh, I was told I have Tendonitis and Golfers elbow. Great!!! My hands still swell up. My joints are hurting in my fingers. I also had to get a Epidural Steroid Injection in my neck. It was horrible. I am so fustrated and have been in pain for 3 years now

RE: Multiple surgeries
Hi Pain, nice to meet you on here. I truely understand your pain with your hands. I am having re-curring carpal tunnel in my right dominant hand. I have done therapy OT/PT for 7 months 4x's a week and no relief of injections , medication, etc. It has been over a year now with not one of many doctors knowing what to do. I was put at MMI with continuation of PM. Medication to make me comfortable and that is about it. I am working full time in another career as I was unable to do anything

I decided I was going to do something myself as far as get help with a MRI etc. I am going this afternoon for my neck. A chiropractor i started going to firmly believes it is from my neck that is causing all this trouble although the EMG says " mild carpal". I have been begging PM to get me in for a MRI and rule out my neck, but they all totally refuse to do so and I think it is because of the cost.

Hopefully someone soon will know from this MRI what I need to have done. My insurance co. already approved it through my chiro. doctor so I know it is paid for. Sometimes you need to do things on your own to get help. I cannot wait anymore as the pain is only getting worse with my fingers locking up. This chiro doctor has been wonderful in trying to help me find why I am having pain, hand turning blue etc.

I only wish you the best, and if you can use your own insurance it may be a good idea to find help , so that you will not suffer any more YEARS. Good luck.

Thank you so much. Using my own insurance is what I am currently doing. My attorney has schedule a mediation hearing in June. This is the 4th time I have had to use my own insurance for this work related injury. I too am tired of taking pain medication. It is only a temporary fix. My right hand and forearm has been swollen most of the day. But, I'm use to it by now. I hope everything goes well for you. Good Luck to you, also.

RE: Multiple surgeries
Pain, welcome to our family. Sorry to hear of your pain and understand competely. had surgery on my left shoulder and things went wrong I now have continual pain in my arm, contractures in the elbow and brachial plexopathy with TOS both vascular and neruo. The surgeon damaged the nerves at the shoulder and colasped the blood vessels in my arm. It is cold to touch, blue and has no strength. after 14 doctors there is nothing that can be done to fix it. Ask about a EMG this will check for nerve damage in the arm and neck. This could be the cause of your pain and swelling. Also ask your MD if it could be RSD. If it is nerve damage there is drugs that can help but will not completely remove the pain. Also ask PT to measure your arm before PT and then after using Isometric, this will show how much use causes it to swell. If it continues to turn blue ask for doppler study, this will show if there is damage to blood vessels.
Angels and prayers coming your way. Keep use informed and good luck.

May God send his angels to hold you in his arms

RE: Multiple surgeries
Thank you Pain. Well I got the MRI done and took the disc home and viewed it. Waiting on the doctor to read it but I saw bulging disc etc. This is the first time i used my insurance for any treatment throughout this whole ordeal. I hope this did not effect my case, but to tell you the truth I really do not care. I cannot sit back and not do anything for my health to get better.

Like i have stated, I do not have a lawyer and got a call from the labor board that i am being paid for the 10% the IME doctor said i had. I have to have a hearing they said and I do not know how doing things on my own are going to effect my case .

Do I present the MRI findings at the hearing? Do i mention how my insurance paid for it? I am so confused by all this and like i said i just want to get help. If i have to use my own insurance I will. What happens when you use your own insurance? Do you get reimbursed at your hearing?

RE: Multiple surgeries
Sparkey, I would strongly Suggest that You have an Attorney with You at the Hearing, Trust Me, You will be Setting across from the i/c's Attorney! Just My Opinion, it's too easy for them to work around You and Use Your Very Own Words or Evidence against You without Counsel! Whatever You decide, I Wish You the Very Best!!Wink
