What would you do?
I have a interesting question i would like to get replies from on what you would do in this situation.
I work for a construction firm and I am the administration person you would first be greeted by when you walk into our company trailer. We have over 60 workers from different companies on site to build a facility. Today one of the presidents of a construction company came to me and told me he just found 13.00 on the way up the porch steps to the office building. He gave me the money and i told him that i would hold onto it in a safe place and see if anyone says they are missing any money. Now, if it was you that had to hold onto this money, what would be the best way to go about handling this 13.00? This president of the company comes back to the trailer about 1 time every other week. If i do not hear from anyone that they have lost money when i see him the next time he comes, should i offer the money to him? I feel if i even offer the money to him that it would be a terrible thing, as it shows i would just give someone else's money to him. I am today making a lost and found container for people that find things on site, but of course money will not be in there. LOL. If anyone could give me their input on this topic to give me some idea's of what to do with it, it would be appreciated. I would put a notice up saying money found. if someone comes to claim it I would ask them how much they lost and what the denominations of the bills were. If they are pretty close I would let them have it since we don't always keep exact track of what we have on us until we are on WC and know every penny. But if it's say 2 fives and 3 ones and they know this they are telling you the truth. If you turn money into the police and no one claims it they get to keep it after I think 30 days. So if no one claims it I would say it's yours.

Sparkey - I would make the lost and found box as you are doing. When things are found log them in with a description and who found it. Set a time period, this can be anything that you choose (1 week, 2 weeks a month, etc and stick to it). If no one claims the item then I would give the person who found it the option of keeping it.
The problem with a construction job and losing things is that so many contractors may just be there for a day or two (concrete guys, etc) and then they are gone never to be seen again. But if something is important to them they will back track and come looking for it. If the money is not claimed then tell the man who found it that it has gone unclaimed and tell him the person who found it should be allowed to keep it. That's just my humble opinion, hope it helps

hope this will help........i actually had a situation like this occur on a job a few years back.........found money under a chair in the reception area where a lot of traffic (staff and people from outside the company) had been.
i put up a notice saying money had been found and to see me.....i had a couple of people come to "claim" the money.........i asked them what day they lost it, how much it was and what demoniations and how it was found(I found it folded several times, not flat)........neither of them correctly ID'd the money.......they were way off on the amt ($29) and neither came close to the day i found it........so i called the corp office and talked to the HR head.......she told me to use the money for our office so i polled the employees.........giving choices like have a drawing to see who gets it; give it to a charity; assist a needy patient; put it toward the office party for Christmas, put it in the kitty for coke, water, coffee for the kitchen etc....... i think monster had a good suggestion too about the person who found it getting to keep it if it's not claimed.......and a time limit on lost and found is needed otherwise stuff stays in there for 100 years!!!!!!!!! nurse83 "After all, tomorrow is another day." If nobody claimed the money within 1 week, I would buy coffee from it and offer it to anyone who walks in...or buy donats or popcorn?

The policy we had was after 30 days then the person who found it gets it .
But I do feel maybe asking the big boss if he wanted it or If he wanted to maybe buy something for the firm .... Then he wont be touchy about it |

I too would use it to buy coffee, donuts, or canned pop for the workers that day.

Thank you for the replies. I think the idea of putting up on the wall that i found money is not a good idea as it seems it turned out from what you guys mentioned , to not be good. People taking lucky guesses etc.
I will hold onto it till i see the guy who found it, and mention to him that noone came forward. I will see what he would like me to do with it. He seems the type to say " keep it".
