Steroid shots
I had a steroid shot in my wrist today.I have had them before, but this was hurting a lot.It looks like I might have a boken blood vessel.there is a knot and it is dark blue and hurts like a dickens.Has anyone had this shot and have this happen?I have very small wrists and there is "0" fat to take the brunt.I guess I can call the doc tomorrow, but don't know what else to do.

RE: Steroid shots
Try putting ice on it for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Make sure that you wrap the ice pack in a towel. See if that helps.

RE: Steroid shots
Hi Beth,
I would ice and elevate tonight, and if it is still a lump tomorrow, give your doctor a call. He may want to know what your reaction to the shot was.

Take care,

RE: Steroid shots
Beth - roomie got home after 9 day stay in hospital...they had an IV in his hand. After they took it out and he got home it developed large knot and was painful although not black and blue. I called ER in the hospital he had been in and they said to use heat 4 times a day. Sounds like yours is worse and different...

Call your local ER tonight and tell them what's going on and see if you should use heat or ice. Call your doc first thing in the morning or even call tonight and leave message then call again first thing in the morning. That sounds very painful, hope it doesn't last long. My last st. inj. into hip he hit bone and apologized immediately, not much fun.

RE: Steroid shots
I drew blood for 15 yrs. and if you have a needle injected and do not put pressure on it after, it developes a Hematoma. It is where the are has bleeding under the skin. If you put ice on it and pressure, it should go down. Just remember the reason we say apply pressure after we take the needle out, is because it will stop the bleeding from occuring under the skin. The doctor will probably tell you that is what it is. This will take a few days to go down now, and be black n blue for awhile.

I did not know why pressure was applied when the needle was taken out, I just knew it was done.

Big Grin RE: Steroid shots
LOL I understand why you put pressure on it. BUT as a nurse, when we DC IV's and such we apply pressure. If it swells up and becomes painful we apply heat to help dissolve any hematomas that might be developing or have already developed!!
See....different people, professions, backgrounds....different ways!!
It would be my understanding that cold would stop it from growing, but wouldn't help it disperse under the skin and be re-absorbed. Heat will allow it to break down in a way that it can easily absorb back into the system.
Try both and let me know what the benefits of them are! It'll be interresting for sure!!
I know, it almost sounds like we're doing a study!! Well, we are...kinda!! Sorry it has to be you going through this and being our 'lab rat'!!
Good luck and I hope you find relief soon!

RE: Steroid shots
I will be a study girl.On this particular cortisone shot, the doctor did not shoot it in the joint, but filled it up not far under the skin saying it would be better to have that than the edema that is compressing on nerve. The dark knot that is hurting so badly is almost an inch from needle site and there is a vein there or was! haha I will try cold and hot and see what happens.
Thanks,Bethsha211
