Question about epidurals

Question about epidurals
Tuesday I had my second spinal epidural. I am told I have S1 radiculpothy, my L5 is involved with fusion at S1.

This procedure went much easier then the first one, problems is since the procedure I've had problems.

The first three days I had headaches that did not go away when I laid down, I still have them but not as severe as earlier.

The leg/nerve pain has gotten worse since the second epidural and
the pain radiates to my foot, on a scale of 1-10 at times it is a 9.

My question is at what point should I see an improvement after the epidural. I am read any time for the improvement.

I had epidurals for cervical radiculopathy. Could not work for days afterward due to increased pain levels. Injection site VERY sore and saw no improvement in my condition. Hope you get to feeling better.

BK, I can not answere your question and I do not want to take away from your post. I can only say that after my first, and that was my last. On day three after the injection my foot felt like it was on fire. Nothing helped. The next day it went back to normal. Take Care.

RE: Question about epidurals

BK...I had 5 before I found relief. BUT I did have relief until I re-injured. Watch those headaches. I needed a blood patch done after my 3rd one. Keep yourself hydrated and lay flat if it's bad. If they persist make sure the Dr. who did the shot knows.

RE: Question about epidurals
Bummer...what we use to do after an injection was too keep the head elevated to prevent the head aches for upto 48 hours after the procedure. This was in the mid 80's when you would stay in the hospital after the procedure for 24-48 hours. I believe that you should call them and let them know that you have this headache. I believe that the headache was the result of possible leakage at the site...it has been long time and the way they do this entire procedures is very different now..but i would call. Don't let it continue at this high of a pain level for very long...love Red

RE: Question about epidurals
Yes, BK...Red is right. That's why I needed the blood patch. There was a slight leak and after a few days of doing everything they told me it was the only way to close it up. Headache went away immediately Spinal heachaches are rough.

RE: Question about epidurals
Red and the others are right on the Money!! I had a total of 36 shots in my L5/S1 Area, My S1 Nerve was so inflamed My Dr. had to give My shots to the Nerves that run to the S1, to try and give me Relief, and none Worked!! Just My Opinion, but if You are experiencing this much trouble after the second set, I would strongly suggest that You don't have the Third Set! Ask Your Dr. for a different regimen to control Your Pain, My Dr. actually sent me for a Second Opinion of Herself, and The other Dr. agreed, with my condition, that the shots were only going to be a Band Aid, and We moved on to another way of Handling My Pain, and put the Shots away! I Hope this Helps, and Have a Great Day!!Wink

RE: Question about epidurals
Still In Limbo

After the epidural the doctor doing the procedure told me he wanted to talk to me about other treatment options before I have the third epidural.

I now question why he said this.

I limped heavily due to the leg/nerve pain yesterday that I am having major problems with my bad (other) knee today.

RE: Question about epidurals
That's why Bummer, because they can see that this is not Helping You, and may actually be Causing You more Pain than the Shots are worth!! If it were me, I would follow the suggestion of another Route, they and You can clearly see that they are not working! Something for everyone to keep in mind, a lot of Dr.'s have found that many i/c's like to try ESI Shots as a first line of Defense to Back Injuries, and they found a New Money Source that can be made easily, and many People Today are getting these Shots when they actually shouldn't be. And a Lot of these Dr.'s have gotten quickly Certified so they can take advantage of this New Found Cash Cow!! Please ERR on Caution with these Shots, Steroids and un needed Meds. are sometimes being Introduced into Peoples Bodies that not long ago, wouldn't have been. This is the current Money Making Fad for some Dr.'s, so Please Be Careful!!Shy
