Another donor for Todd
I though I would give this a different thread as it starts another chapter with the struggles of locating a kidney for Todd.

The transplant was scheduled to happen Tuesday of this week, February 21st. but was called off due to issues with Todd's & the donor's blood clotting when mixed together.

The family believes Todd has some issues with his blood making a match for a kidney difficult but the doctor will not confirm this.

Anyway another donor has come foreward, her name is Cindnay, a future member of the family. She and my nephew will be marrying within a year.

Cindnay is scheduled to start testing for being a potential donor.

What is special about Cindnay is she works as a nurse at a large hospital in Kansas City which already does transplants.

Cindnay is well versed on the medical problems with the blood issues that have prevented a successful transplant from happening.

The doctors do admit things need to be done differently with Todd.

Todd needs to have this antibody test done sooner than later. This is the last chance to get a kidney, it's stupid that it wasn't done before the first transplant attempt.

I agree and Todd is aware of this.

Haven't talked to them much this week but I think Cindnay getting involved is a good thing.
She is a tell it like it is girl and will take charge.

I am told she is aware of the blood and antibody issue.

RE: Another donor for Todd
why isnt this done? seems to me this would have taken care of a whole lot of problems before the other failed kidney transplant also.

RE: Another donor for Todd
As bodybuilder said it is not the normal procedure to do blood testing for the antibody.

My sister had a liver transplant in 2006 with that transplant everything had to be an exact tissue match and to do that lots of testing was required.

With a kidney transplant things do not have to be an exact tissue match and not near the testing is done with this type of transplant.

See this is my problem, you can only get a kidney transplant twice. Livers, hearts are a bit different, I've read about a guy who has had 10 heart transplants, it's easier to transverse and replace those arteries and veins. You screw up a kidney transplant twice and you screw the patient. The antibody test needs to be done every time, ahead of time. It saves a great deal of heartache. Not to mention Todd's wife had a big problem after the surgery.

Kidney transplants do need to be an exact tissue match, otherwise the kidneys die quickly or are rejected. With livers it's different due to the size of the organ and how it processes hormones, digestion, etc. That's where alot of testing comes in.

I think Todd and his wife should of done alot of medical info themselves before the original attempt at a transplant, asked alot more questions. Problems occur way to often when patients don't question the doctors enough. But patients often feel that it's not their choice to question doctors, if a doctor becomes snotty about answering questions then in my opinion it's time to get another doctor. It is there place, I find that most doctors respect a well educated patient. Those patients usually have better outcomes because they understand the process better. Healing, recovery time, medications, rehab.

RE: Another donor for Todd
Interesting I was always told liver transplants need to be exact tissue matches.

My opinion, Lori & Todd have to much faith in this doctor and need to find a different doctor who is more detailed.

Off Subject kinda of......I called my surgeon's office today asking questions about treatment & recovery for the hand surgery. I want to know who long I will be in a cast after surgery.

The nurse did not know how to respond and acted suprised a patient would ask such questions. I asked the nurse to get with the surgeon and get me some answers as it will help me decide when to schedule surgery.
