It's a spinal fusion between L4-L5. The reason is a pinched nerve caused by a bulging disk.

im having that done on 4-18(L4-L5) and in my eyes is not minimally invasive(through the stomach) and 5% failure is wrong.theres alot going on there. the discs theyre fused to need to be good (mine is being fused to a bulging disc, why?idk) plus it DOES degenerate the discs theyre fused to so look into a little more before you make your decision. spine.org is a good site for info. good luck

I was told that my will be done through my back. Good luck on your surgery. Did they tell you what your recovery time will be? Keep me posted on your surgery? God Bless

yeah they said id have a walker for atleast a week, recovery is 4 months before i start physical therapy, but i have another herniated disc at T12-L1 that when i did PT in the beginning it made that one alot worse so i dont see how i coud do PT anyway. through the stomach the muscles arent affected they can be retracted , through the back they have to cut through muscle, ive heard its more painful but shorter recovery, but everyones different. i dont think the surgery will happen that soon they didnt give WC enough time in my opinion to sign off on it, but i heard most first surgeries are cancelled due to this time frame. well do your research and good luck and keep posting on new updates so we have stuff to write about cause im very bored, ha. oh also the more surgeries you have the success rate drops dramatically with each one, so if the first one doesnt work think real hard about letting them back in

RE: 3 Weeks since I seen the IC dotor
IC is sending me for a second opinion on 4-18-12. I've had an EMG which the specialist said it confirms what he thought and asked for approval for surgery. My personal doctor had also refer me to his specialist however the cost to me will be $220 just for the visit.

However the doctor that me personal doctor had refer me to seems to be good and had done the first artificial disk replacement in NJ. After some research it seems that the disk replacement may be better for me. Quicker recovery time full range of motion and greater success rate with a lower chance of needing another surgery.

Has anyone look into this. I think I'll start a new thread to get other thoughts.

thats what im having the replacement and the doc said it still deteriorates the discs its fused to.he takes the disc out and replaces it and screws a cage around it. he said 4 months recovery and most likely future surgeries. i cant believe he actually admitted that though. whatever procedure he tells you look it up and see what it intails at spine.org and other sites

I don't have a date yet for my surgery. The IC is sending me for a second opinion this Wednesday. But whenever it gets approve it will be the same L4-L5.

Are you getting a fusion at L4-L5 or disk replacement at L4-L5?

RE: 3 Weeks since I seen the IC dotor
Jayc123, you are close with your discription.

What happens is, the disc is removed and in its place is two titanum cages (one on the right and left side of the vertabre) that are filled with bone marrow. Then there will be two rods attached with screws to the upper and lower verabre. Again, one on the right and one on the left side of the vertabre. The purpose of the rods is to stabilize the spine untill the marrow has grown and fused the upper and lower vertabre together.

8-05, Micro laminectomy/disectomy. 10-05 lumbar fusion L5-S1. 2-07 exploritory surgery. 12-07 medical implant, Spinal Cord Stimulator. now receiving SSDI. Jesus died for our sins. Soilders died for our freedom.
