[Bummer Knees]

Lucky I come from a family of Law Enforcement Officers. At holidays our family has had conversations about metal detectors and what sets them off.

My brother-in-law works for the county at the courthouse and he is the officer stationed at the metal detector. He tells me titanium will set off the detector, and I am proof of that as I have been thru the detector at the courhouse when he was on shirft.

I've posted on this forum about a trip I took to Las Vegas a few years ago, every metal detector located at every airport I traveled I set off the alarm. In Vegas I was seperated from my husband and group I was traveling with, taken to a seperate room and searched.

The officer took a portable wand and waved it over various body parts with the wand going crazy when it went over the left knee, the one with the knee replacement.

I've also discussed this problem with my surgeon, his take was that is why manufactured issue ID cards for those with implants.

Maybe they did a bait and switch on you, and you are really just held together with duct tape.

I have recently been thru DFW,DEN,LAS,ATL,JFK,etc. Titanium is non metallic. I have had several X-rays also. Whether the airport scanner detects the titanium or not poses no threat to a IW such as myself.

No harm intended with my comment. Some maybe avoiding Airport scanners that need to have no fear.




I ask my spine specialist years ago and Titanium poses no problems to the flying traveler.

I have a spinal cord stimulator implanted in my body. It is made from titanium and yes it will and does set scanners off. I have a medical card that i carry and use that tells them in 14 different languages that I have an implant in my body and it will set your scanners and alarms off. I have had to produce my card evertime I go through a scanner.

It was not my intention to start a war. I was only trying to give the information based on my personal experience.
I have a titanium cage, titanium plate and Titanium screws in my back. My spinal surgeon told me titanium was not a issue at Airport screenings and for me it has not been a issue. Why I get through Airports with no issues? Maybe there are different grades of Titanium.
It was not my intentions to offend anyone.

Back in 2007 the surgeon used titanium plates and Titanium screws on me as well.. And in 2008 I set off our new local kohls, but now I can go in there and it dont anymore.. Sounds strange considering thier scanner was for shoplifters, I did ask why it dont set it off now, they said some screw up sent the wrong detectors.... Weather its true, i really dont know. I dont and wont ever fly so I couldnt tell ya if i would set off the alarms at a airport... But I will tell you, My surgeon did say it would and all I needed was a some kind of card....


Its easy to asume alot when your retirement plan is as big as freebirds....... How big is yours lucky...? And does it make a difference...?

I have a titanium / cobalt knee replacement, I have titanium plate and screws in my lower mandible, I also have breast implants. The newer scans might show the breast implants, I read an article months ago about women getting implants in their breasts that are bombs. The titanium in my knee, my jaws, may or may not set off alarms. I'm not going to worry about it. There used to be a card available to say you have an implant and where it is located. That changed after 2004, no longer available. Cards are available for individuals with pacemakers, those are the only ones available.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Portugal later this year, I'm not going to allow my implants to change our vacation plans to see his family. We'll allow for extra time, I won't let the scans bother me or anything else.

We are headed to New York in April then Orlando in May.. My companion and I are in our silver years and looking forward to some R&R.
We will fly the friendly skies. Now I do have a Heart stent and I do tote a Card for this. I also will allow time for this.

BB i have a card with my name my Dr's name and his adddress and phone number on it, the card was supplied to me from Medtronics Corp. the manufacture of the spinal cord stimulator, and yes it is made of titanium. My implant was back in 2008, and the card was issued for the use of setting off scanners. I worked in retail for 35 yrs, and have been around and installed scanners in retail stores, my titanium does and at other times will set off a scanner at a retial outlet, but it does at airports and government buildings that have them.
