How long do you think the average case is open?

Short as possible and shorter than needed if one is "played".

RE: Just curious
First we have to decide what is average. From a minor cut or scratch to a multi level fussion or death... I think the fastest claim would be from death, hard to prove he/she is not dead.. I have been in the system since nov 07, and hope to be out of it by year 5.....

Seems to me they stay open much longer than they need to be. I would be THRILLED if the insurance company would let me move forward with the treatment I need so I can go back to work!

most states have statistics that might help get you a number.
http://www.workerscomp.state.nm.us/research/index.php

the vast majority are "medical only" so I suspect the duration would end up much lower then you think.
comp systems have been around for many years so you would have a tremendous number of claims to average and each state has different rules that change from year to year. even if you could come up with a number it would be very difficult to say what it meant.

i suspect the litigation rate is a big factor in keeping cases open.

if money and therefore resources were not a factor many things could be done quicker and better; from education to renewable energy.
but those are always going to limit what can be done and how fast it gets done.

RE: Just curious
I was in injured in May 2005 and just settled (if not appealed) a couple of weeks ago. I found out it would have settled in 2009 but the attorneys were playing games

settled for lifetime medical and weekly payments

Generally a IC closes WC cases ASAP. A example of "being played" is when the TTD checks stop, no income and the IW has to make a decision thats not generally in there best interest. IC's know how to starve out IW's.
The IC throws out some low ball settlement and the IW takes it to keep from going bankrupt. The IW was played.
