Adoption
My wife and I had to put down our 12 year old lab over a month ago, he had bone cancer.. Eventhough we still have Buster a puggle, the house seems empty. We have been searching for 3 weeks for another lab and yesterday I knew we found the right one... He is at a shelter and was left on the side of the road at 8 weeks old, and has been in the shelter for 30 days now. I never knew adopting a dog would be so hard, having to show proof of owning a house, background check, had to show refrences not related to us, have to check busters vet records and our past labs records, every household member as well as pets have to interact with the pup. I think if they would loosen up on thier security all the animal shelters here would not be full. I have included 2 pics, dont like the name of the lab but subject to change and of course my little buddy buster..

RE: Adoption
Why Buster is ENORMOUS! He is a very, very big little dog!
I know adopting pets from shelters can seem like a pain, but they are about protecting the pets. A lot of people would take those animals and abuse them if checks were not in place. A shelter near Tampa was broken into recently and most of their dogs were stolen. People are afraid they were taken to be "bait dogs" in dog fights. Very sick people out there. Congratulations on the new pup. I had a black lab years ago. best dogs in the world. |

RE: Adoption
not only hard to do but expensive.....you can almost get a purebred for what you pay for one at a shelter.....however most shelter pets come already fixed, wormed and all their shots.....
;)Workmans comp is not a road you want to travel alone. You need a good lawyer,a great family and good friends to lean on.If you make it thru without losing everything you have worked for all your life, you have come out ahead of the game.....

RE: Adoption
Thanks Admin, you know I thought I had everything figured out.. Yesterday they said they were going to check all refrences and background check this morning. And all we had to do today was bring down our son and proof of busters license and shots were up to date. We got there they observed all of us with the puppy again and put our buster in a pen outside with the pup.. All went well, they played and ran together, within 15 min I had the pup sitting and fetching a frisby. Needs a litle work with dropping it at my feet and abit hyper, but what can be expected from a puppy that has been caged for a month.....
After 2 trips at 140 miles each they decided they need to think more, well i said yesterday you said all you had to do was check our refrences and background check... She replied with oh yes every thing checked out good but we had 1 other person who did a application over the net over a week ago and has not yet been here to even look at the dog yet..... Well, at this point my blood preasure is peaked and my pain was topped out and I almost ler her have it... But instead I asked when will we know more, well not til tuesday........ Jayne, all my life I have always got pure breads, except for our last lab scooby. He did come from a breader though and he was an oops, what happened was a stud golden retriever some how got in with one of his female black labs, and you know the rest.. He was absolutely beatiful and at a 120 lbs was the best dog we ever had. Less then 1 week he was potty trained and was very gentle and was the kiddy ride (horse).. This puppy would and could not ever replace scooby but want that mixture again. |

RE: Adoption
Bronco, what you are describing is nuts. You've jumped through all the hoops but have to wait because someone else put in an online app a week ago but has not yet appeared (or jumped through the hoops you have)?
They should tell them, "Sorry, but someone beat you to it". A good home is a good home. Period. I hope it goes well for you. She looks adorable. By the way, I am really tempted to make an avatar out of Buster. That is a great photo! |

RE: Adoption
Thats a good thing. Mine use to do that when he was a pup. It took a little bit to break him of the habit, but he turned out to be a great gaurd dog. One day when I had some guys trimming the trees. One of them wanted to use the restroom. I really wasn't thinking and I went back outside. Well my dog (chance) would not let him out of the restroom because I was outside. After I heard him yelly out the bathroom window for help. I rushed back in to find chance at the bathroom door showing his big teeth. LOL
From the look at the pup, he is going to be between 125 and 150 lbs. Now is the time to train. I got mine ( part pitbull and part lab ) when I had a good back. Now, if he acted stupid. there is not much I can do. Fortunatley he does not know that. LOL 8-05, Micro laminectomy/disectomy. 10-05 lumbar fusion L5-S1. 2-07 exploritory surgery. 12-07 medical implant, Spinal Cord Stimulator. now receiving SSDI. Jesus died for our sins. Soilders died for our freedom. |

It's unlikely that it's a cruel test of any kind, it's just that you're probably dealing with goody-2-shoed airheads. If I was still raising Shih Tzus, I'd send you one free of charge. They're great little dogs. I have two of em that sleep with me, hugging up on each side of me in their preferred spots every night! And to think I use to say, 'NO dog will EVER live inside of my house!!'
