Jaw surgery in Sept
Yes, yes, September 29th is a long way off. But here's the thing, need to start planning foods to eat, what to buy, etc. I'm one who craves protein, been that way all of my life. Add to that any fruit with meat and gag city.
Normally my weight is 112lbs, so I have absolutely none to loose but the average patient drops about 15lbs. I'm lactose intolerant, can manage some but not much. I will be buying whey protein powder to use twice daily, mixed with water I can usually manage it. The surgery, jaw lengthening, lower mandible. I had braces on as a teen and the powers that be messed it up really good. Guess it didn't help that I moved overseas during the braces thing. I didn't get a retainer after the braces were removed so everything went back to original spot. Had a severe overbite, upper teeth were way past the lower gums. The plan is to split my lower jaw (inside, no outside incision), and bring it forward 6mm. No wiring of the jaws required, I will have a splint on the upper teeth attached to my braces. Not really looking forward to this, I've had braces on since Jan 09. Cashed in my 401K to pay for the braces. Hopefully within the next year everything will be off of my teeth except the retainer on the lowers and the upper splint. Pureed diet for 6 weeks then move up to soft, then as tolerated. I'll eat a KC strip 2 days before, buy a nice thick 2 or 3 inch one. So give me some ideas about eats, pureed food ideas usually make me gag. BB |

Umm, one other thing worth considering: Don't forget to quit yapping for a month or so!

RE: Jaw surgery in Sept
BB, I got my full mouth braces on last July. As an adult, it is much harder. I don't remember my boys having the food issues I have.
My surgeon wanted to do jaw surgery like yours until he found out I had RSD, and then wouldn't do it. He said on a normal person it takes at least a year for the nerves to regenerate and on me, or someone else with a nerve problem, the nerves may or may not ever get better. So, braces it was! I've gotten use to a high calories protein drink for breakfast. After working out, I have some cottage cheese with fruit or baby bell cheese. For the longest time, my dinner was homemade fruit smoothies. Also lactose intolerant, I use Diamond Almond Milk which is lactose and soy free. Soy milks ruin a good fruit smoothie. Vegetables are still a problem. I like my vegetables but not like baby food. This time of year, zuchinni is very good. To make sure I get the vegetables daily, I have a V-8 every night before dinner. Yogurt before bed. Also works to keep the GERD under control. Since you are very slim, ice cream and milkshakes are good sources of protein as well. Keep us posted.

RE: Jaw surgery in Sept
Hi Chris,
Ty for the advice, baby food is for babies not adults. Milk shakes as tolerated but it's limited, the last thing I want is vomiting after surgery. I will be able to talk, splint on upper teeth only. But liquids for 6 weeks will be a challenge. But I'm very grateful for friends who give me advice about what I can eat. BB |

RE: Jaw surgery in Sept
As a vegeterian and being unable to tolerate dairy products I depend on different sources of protein.
I try different blended fruit/juice drinks (juice & fruit) If I add ice cream it is very limited, I find Braums to be easier to tolerate. There are different protein powders that can be added to food or drinks that don't mess with the flavor. There is one I used when in Washington State that was really good, don't know if it is sold in Kansas, if I find it I will post the name. Some yoguarts I can tolerate as some are lactose free. |
