Sometimes we have to move on especially if we are capable. Only the IW knows the truth. It is hard to make decisions especially when one is looking at "change" but in this case I believe it is a Reality and He will survive this. Unless there is something I am not "getting" I would be looking at another field of work or school. SSA does not care how much money you can make.
