Dieting? - chrischris - 01-05-2008 03:23 PM

My doctor (not WC) wants me to start the SouthBeach Diet. I ordered the book from Amazon, and did read a little bit about the diet on the internet. It sounds so hard during Phase 1, the first 2 weeks. No Fruit is what is the killer, and no white stuff like sugar, flour, no cereals, no yogurt. (I just bought a case of Yogurt at Costco).

Has anyone been on this diet, and how did it work for you?

I never had a weight problem before my injury, but due to loss of an active outdoor life and medications, I've gained 35+ lbs.

Hooray! With the above post, I am now a 5-Star Posting Freak, but I have my own saying added. Tongue

1171, you're falling behind! We were tied for the longest time. You need to spend more time here! Tongue

****I know this is not related to the above post, BUT I am so excited about my 5 Stars. Thanks Admin!

I have never been on that diet, but I have heard some of the nurses talking about it. I don't think cutting fruits is a good idea. I do think white flour is bad for you. I like you have never had a problem until now because of inactivity. Hope the diet works for you. If you need any encouragement I will give it. Congrats on the 5 stars......

CC - I have been so lucky all my life that I have never really had to diet...but now I need to drop at least 15 pounds and 20 would be better. I don't think I could stick to a diet if I had to. My diet consists of sugar, chocolate, meat, potatoes, sugar, chocloate, etc, LOL. By all rights I should weigh 400 lbs and not be able to fit through a doorway the way I eat!!! I hope the diet works for you. I thought yogurt was a good thing, when did yogurt become a no no???

Congrats on the five start rating, I'm happy you've been back and posting girl Smile

Monster, that was probably last week that yogurt became bad. Next week they will say it's the best thing in the world. Just like eggs, milk, meat on and on. I'm like you, eat what I want. When I have to drop weight I usually just eat the same things but smaller portions. I have found if I use a salad size plate instead of a dinner plate I lose weight because my mind thinks I'm eating a full plate. Too bad I couldn't take a sugar pill and think it was getting rid of the pain.

I went on the south beach diet a few years ago. I did lose 8 lbs. but that is because i cut out the " WHITE STUFF". They say if you gain weight around the stomache that it is caused by to much bread, sugar etc. It was a very unrealistic diet, and many have tried it. I read the whole book when i went on the diet.

I myself prefer weight watchers. I was on it for many years, off and on. It is the only real diet i ever was on that shows you portion size and you are able to eat anything as long as you watch what your eatting. I know it cost 10 dollars a week, but was worth it in the end. I had to give it up due to being on a never ending battle with weight gain when i was injured. I was put on cymbalta which kept making me gain weight each week. So i had to quit weight watchers. I say, good luck with the diet. Everyone has to do what they think will work for them.

There are many FAD diets out there, and the worst is to bounce back and forth, from loosing weight to gaining weight. The one sure way to loose weight is to push yourself away from the table and eat a balanced diet. I have lost 8 lbs in the past 3 months because of cutting portions . It is better to loose slowly. And make sure you drink lots of liquids. Good Luck all that are trying to loose.

CC

My sister in law uses some of the recipes from the south beach diet and that's about it. To her it's more about eating in portion and healthier than giving up things that you love to eat. So like instead of white bread she eats wheat bread - eats turkey bacon, etc. (Sorry to me turkey bacon doesn't taste like bacon ...... lol) I can eat the wheat bread that's not a problem as I love it - but other than that - I tend to like some things but I eat small amounts of food normally myself.

Like tuffy said - it's about eating smaller portions but eating healthy. They also say if you eat smaller meals - you actually eat less. I know when I lived over seas and we ate like 5 and 6 times a day - I did actually eat less and lost weight without trying. I still ate things I like - including fruit in the middle of the afternoon. I think I actually got down to like 100 lbs at one point before I realized I needed to gain weight again ....... lol

Thanks for the replies everyone. I do know that the best thing is to eat less, and well balanced. And to stay away from the white stuff and the chocolate.

That makes more sense than a fad diet. I was surprised my doctor actually named the Southbeach diet to me. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Sparkey, with Weight Watchers, do you have to go to meetings?

Pooh, did you lose weight with the Topamax? I've read that it is not recommended for slim people because of that.

Monster, someday you are going to wake up a blimp. Did you ever consider that your diet might play a part in your being in so much pain all the time? Tongue

Backache, I don't think I can give up fruit, even if it is for only two weeks. I live in an agriculatural area. Oh, the oranges right now are so sweet. I have been squeezing fresh OJ every morning. There is nothing better! Tongue

Tuffy, thanks! you are so right. Congrats on the weight loss, but after seeing your pic, it doesn't look like you need to lose any weight!

CC You are so sweet, But yes I have a small frame, and need to loose at least 20 which I have gained in the past 2 years, I feel better at a lower weight. So have been trying hard to loose , And I drink alot of juice and water, It fills me up and curbs my appetite.

I stay away from Carbs and sugar. And use the 3 Bs ( broiled, boiled, or baked) nothing fried and NO fast foods.!!!!!!!!!!
