I just can't believe what's happening here with my daughter's family.
She just gave birth to my new granddaughter last Friday, baby was a few weeks premature, so hospital kept baby inside. In the meantime, the two older boys(five and three years old), came down with flu like symptoms, so everyone was exposed, including my daughter, who was discharged after one day.
Since Sunday, nobody can see the newborn, including her own mother. The newborn's doctor said, she can be released from hospital in two days, but everyone in the family has to treated with Tamiflu for 48 hours.
My daughter was able to get the Tamiflu prescription over the phone for herself, but she can't afford to pay $70.00 copay for it, so pharmacy will not give it to her. She was supposed to take the two older kids for testing, but she will not do it, she can't pay for the Tamiflu anyway.
I was supposed to go to Urgent care to be tested for swine flu and get the Tamiflu, as baby's doctor wants everybody treated with Tamiflu no matter what(I never had any flu like symptoms, although I was the one who took care of the two older kids).
I have Medicare, I don't know if they cover it or not and I just can't afford to pay the whole cost.
Now what are we supposed to do?
Newborn can't be released as everyone in the household was exposed to some type of flu. Can't get Tamiflu due to above reasons.

Kat, the doctor and the hospital can't make some sort of financial arrangement for you and family in this dire situation? Maybe we can take up a collection for you and you can pay later. Explain the situation to the doctor and the hospital. Meanwhile, I can contribute something--not much--but something. Hopefully others can, too. Now we just need some sweety like monster or Red to receive the collections and forward it to you. It's just a thought, but who knows!

Wink what a wonderful idea. I can't give a lot either, but this is awlful. Kat... monster is not here, I will get on this right now and see what I can do to collect funds for you. Also there is an indigent program set up in every hospital for low income people. The indigent program is supplemented by the federal government each year. Call or go talk to the CEO...Chief Executive Officer...or the Department Head in the Business office..they can help you with this. Or call the pharmacy and speak to their heads about how they can help you also. Do you know eactly how much you need? Please send me a pm and I will get right on this. A baby needs their mother and family when they are first born. This is very important ... let me help you. Red
I have a hard time believeing this...who died and made him God? if he is requiring it let his fancy a$$ pay for it...call your congressman or better yet a good lawyer.....
Red, You can count on me, Just let me know. and the check will be in the mail.......
Wink, this is a wonderfull idea......Bless you. and Red.
Wink and Red,
Thank you very much for your kindness, but please don't take up any collection on our behalf. This terrible situation will resolve sooner or later.
The latest news is, hospital is going to discharge the baby in two days and my daughter has to take the Tamiflu no matter what. I think the hospital social worker will help her get it.
Rest of the family(including myself) has to stay away from the baby, only my daughter can go near her. I think it has to be at least seven days.
Their finance situation is not very good because my son in-law lost his construction job about six months ago. My daughter has a good job with the city so they didn't qualify for any type of assistance. The trouble was, she had difficult pregnancy, she was on bed rest and couldn't work for about three months off and on so she didn't get paid.
My son in-law just started to work about a week ago, hopefully his job will last through the winter and my daughter can go back to work in December.
I am very angry, because the hospital knew we were exposed to some type of flu and they still discharged my daughter 24 hours after giving birth. She came home, she got the flu and she is stuck at home crying because she can't see or hold her own baby. This hospital has a very good reputation but I don't think they are handling this situation well. If they are so concerned about the swine flu, why not set up a testing station there? The trouble is, even if we were tested for swine flu and the result would be negative, we would still have to take the Tamiflu. This drug is so expensive($185.00) few people even with insurance can't afford it.
Thank you again for trying to help, I do appreciate it.
If it's not too much trouble, instead of the collection, please say a prayer for my daughter and her family.
Kat
Very well, then. Let us know how everything goes!
Kat- prayers went up last night and will continue until the baby is home with her Mom and you can hold her. Please keep us posted.
Kat...same coming from PA. Prayers for your whole family. Especially Mother and baby.
My husband just got out of the hospital with pneumonia. Of course they tested him for influenza and H1N1. He tested neg for both BUT the infectious disease Dr. told his this test is only 10% effective in recognizing H1N1. Not real good odds.
Kat best of luck and this flu is spreading like wild fire.I hope someone will help them out so they all dont get sick.
