I just have to share what happened to me a few days ago.

My three year old grandson, whom I watch in their home since July, went missing a few days ago.
He played in the backyard, which is fully fenced with a six feet wooden fence and I could watch him from the kitchen, while I was cooking.
I went to the garage freezer just for two minutes and when I looked for him again, he was gone. I started calling him, no answer. I looked for him in the yard, in the house, looked if any gate/door was open, all locked. I looked in all closets since he likes to hide there sometimes, negative.
I am running in/out of the house, really panicking now, thinking a kidnapper somehow entered the yard and took him?
By this time, about five minutes passed, so I decided to call 911.
While I am talking to operator I am in the yard, still running around and I decided to try the shed door which we keep closed but not locked. It was locked and sure enough, my grandson was hiding inside, saying nothing.
I told the 911 operator to cancel the firetruck and police, which they did. I found the shed door key and got my grandson out and put him in timeout.
About ten minutes later, this huge firetruck pulls up, three firemen jumps out, starts taking out all kinds of equipments, tools. I apologized and sent them on their way.
Five minutes later, a policeman rings the doorbell. I tell him samething, he doesn't believe me, he wants to see the shed door(why?) I take him through the house to the backyard, he sees the steeldoor on the shed, he says yeah I see..and finally leaves.
Eversince, I keep asking..did I make a fool out of myself? Did I overreact?

I just wanted to share how three year olds can make your hair turn white overnight.

Kat
no you didnt over react....I would have done the same thing

ask how you would have felt had he been taken or severely injured where minutes would have been the difference between life and death.......

and you had not called.

which second guessing scenario would be easier to live with today?

oh, and I'm sure this is the very first time the police or fire have ever been in that situation.......

not.

send them some cookies if it will help you deal with it.......

I had this happen to me while shopping at Wal Mart.
My daughter was 6 yrs and went missing; I searched for her and could not find her.
I alerted store staff, a code Adam was called and the store was locked down.

My daughter was found in the entry way of the store where the vending machines are. She was hiding behind a machine.

I felt guilty for a long time about this, but my first priority was my daughter's safety.

Kat.....I would have made the same call. You're no fool, just a good Grandma.

1171.....nice post.
Kat, You did what you should have done. When my oldest was 4, we were at what they call Maxwell street days and I turned around and he was gone, I was with my sister and her kids and they had no idea where Jeff was. I did a panic, went to the nearest phone and called the police. My son was sitting at the police station waiting for my husband to pick him up. He was found by a lady crying for his mommy. and she called the police. lucky the officer that came to get him was a friend and knew my hubby, who they called. I was scared to death....... Better to be safe than sorry..... It could have been much worse.
Kat= I agree with the rest, it is better to call 911 and find him than have something happen and know that the time waiting could have made a difference.
You did nothing wrong. I would have done the same.

Just a note. Anytime a call goes out to the police. If they are called back and told to cancel the call. They are not supposed to. I was given that info many years ago. The rational behind it is. They do not know if someone is holding a gun to your head and making you make the second call. Just thought I would share.
I feel better knowing most of you have done the same thing.
1171..I might visit the firestation with my grandson as he loves firetrucks and will thank them in person.
I keep thanking God nothing serious happened and I keep hugging him knowing how lucky we are to have him.

Kat
i would have fell apart you did the right thing and it feels good to see someone give God the glory for it
