Well now that I've been approved I have questions please and of course I know where to go to get the right answers Smile

1.) Do we have to be reevaluated periodically or is this for life? I think I was awarded this based pretty much on the psych claim so I'm just wondering if I have to go through an evaluation periodically. If so that is fine, I'm just wondering what to expect.

2.) I'm assuming when I move I have to notify the SSDI office? Will they take some of my back pay away for moving? I am NOT leavinbg this state until I have the money in my hands and I have been here since 1985 so all the money I have paid in has been to Cali.

3.) Some have said my monthly dollar amount will decrease if I go to Texas and I was told yesterday by a friend that it shouldn't. Does anyone know for sure? I don't even know what I will be getting per month. Whatever it is will be terrific though Smile

For all of you who are still fighting this sytem please know you can win but you have to keep fighting. I really didn't think my day in court would ever get here but it finally does and it's worth the fight. Please keep going, hold your head high and know that in the end you will prevail.

Love and thanks again,
monster
1) Yes, you will be re-evaluated. The question is, at what interval???? 3,5, or 7 years????. If I am correct, that will be stated in the letter of approval.

2) SSA is not local. It is federal. Meaning, all the money you payed into SS did not go to Cali.. It went to the federal government. SSDI is not state specific. I don't recall reading any where that you are required to let SSA know that you are moving. However, it is wise to let them know were to send the check. (O, you already knew that ).

3) SSDI is based on what you payed into the program. Not were you live.
Thanks so much AQA. I just still can't believe this is happening, happy happy, joy joy over here, LOL!

I just wish everyone here would hurry up and get what they need. Makes me feel bad that I know my struggle is kind of over with and yet we still have so many here who need so much Sad
Monster I will file my first appeal either Monday or Tuesady. I have an attorney for SSDI and will either get my things to him on Mon or Tues.
I hope my appeal goes better than my original application did.. and again congradulations on you big win.
Monster everything AQA posted is right on target.

Good luck with that!

CF I have read about your medical and do feel you will be approved.
I worked as a mentor for Socail Security Administration in 91/92. I assisted parents of disabled children apply for SSI benefits for their children.

Social Security Administration provided training for a hand full of mentors in my state and I was fortunate to be one of them. Most of the training I received was on the children's side of SSI, although we did receive some training on the adult side.

One thing I learned in my training was when a person applies, SSA looks at the applicant's disabilty or labels. One example given was if the applicant has bipolar SSA will deny 3 times before they approve the applicant for benefits.

Each label is looked at differently, for example an applicant with learning disabilities will be denied as many as 4 or 5 times before approval.

This is way it is important to include all of your medical when applying for benefits.

And one correction; DDD, or known as Disability Determination Services is the organization that determines if the applicant qualifies of is denied for benefits.

Monster,

AQA is right on the money with all of his answers. They will not take anything away because you are moving, nor is your award amount based on the fact that you live in Cali, but upon what you paid into the system while you were working.

The one question he didn't answer is, yes, you do have to notify SS when you relocate. They have to have a good address to send any paperwork to you. Once you have the date they set your disabilty on, you have 24 months from that time before you become eligible for medicare. One to 2 months prior to the end of that 24 months, they are going to send you your medicare card, as well as any information in regards to supplements.

I have heard that the majority of re-evaluations take place 5 to 7 years after you are placed on SSDI. My paperwork said 7 years before a redetermination. Of course, they may only request that you send in paperwork from your physician showing that you are still disabled, or they may want to send you to a physician for an eval. Another reason why you need to keep them informed of your location. I am sure that you won't want to have to travel to Cali several years down the road for that.

I am so happy that you are finally going to be able to make the trip home. Once you are settled, and things are a little better off for the both of us, we are going to have to make plans to meet somewhere, even if I have to drive the majority of the way to do so. Nothing like a road trip to meet an old friend !!

Monster you could never be a dork. Sorry I couldn't help answer your questions but it looks like other have done well. I have filed my second appeal so I have to wait for a hearing, which I'm told where I live it takes atleast a year and a half to get that. They are not much better the WC when it comes to caring about us and our need to eat.

Thanks for the info on the reevaluation.

According to paper work I received when I was qualified for SSDI, I will have a reevaluation in 2010.

I have read that SSA will be steping up reevaluations at President Obama's request.
Since we are speaking about re-evaluation. There is a way to extend it. My paper work stated that I would be re-evaluated every seven years. However, I am participating in the ticket for work program. My first evaluation will be in 10 years now. As long as I complete something like 6 to 8 credit hours a year. Less than a full time student.

Another thing about re-evaluation. You will want to be seen by a dr. every three months. Even if it is a free clinic. You will want to have some kind of medical documentation every three months. If not, SSA may deem that you are no longer disabled.

PS. before someone starts to think that I am telling people how to beat the system. I am not. I have never been about that. I am mearly pointing out information that can be found else where.
AQA from what I have been told the ticket to work program is a great program, I am interested in it and have been checking into it.

I would like to start the program but first need to have my medical taken care of.

Still no treatment on the back or right knee. Also need carpal tunnel srgery of the dominant hand. I was enrolled in a class last fall and had to drop the class, couldn't write more then 30 seconds at a time.

This program is a great opportunity for a person to go back to school learn a trade, and return to work earning a decent wage.
