My parents have recently moved to a continuum of care residence in the state of Maryland. They are in independent living and pay a home care aid for helping my Dad for about 30 hours per week. They were planning on getting renter's insurance which includes liability, but the senior home says they need to purchase worker's compensation. They do not have a business. Can the senior home require this, and if so, can individuals, not businesses purchase worker's compensation. My mother has had difficulty locating insurers that will provide worker's comp to an individual, so can you tell us of any companies that would be good to call for this?
In Maryland, all employers having one or more employees, full or part-time, are required to have WC Insurance for the benefit of their employees. Any domestic worker whose earnings are $750 or more in any calendar quarter from a private household is covered.
It is difficult finding insurance for just one person. Not enough money in it for agents to handle. Have you tried the "Get Insurance" link at the top of this page? No idea if they can help you, but probably worth a shot.
Is this home health aid doing this on her/his own, or working through an agency?. If through an Agency then such Agency would be responsable for WC coverage.

The household employee works at a rehab center and is doing this as a way to get more income, so he is not coming through an agency. Thanks.
can you hire one thru an agency? or is it possiable to do the work yourself? if not and I know its hard as I am taking care of both my folks.....will the person sign a waiver that "they" are responsiable for having their own WC......seems to me it would cost more for WC than you pay them for home health care......My folks get some help from a home health care agency......housekeeping and wound care for my Mom and one of them helps me shower my Mom...I do daddy as he doesnt want anyone else to help.....good luck as this job is bitter sweet
