Bummer, as u know I recently moved and went thru a divorce, my question is about trying to find something for my son for his behavior, he so far has been on ritalin, abilify, and namenda, they just made him worse.so as of right now he is not taking anything, today is the first day of school. new teacher, new school.Any suggestions?I figure they will call me about an hour after school starts to come get him. Thanks halftrak
My son is on foclin for behavior & ADHD.

This medication works similar to ritalin but better and dosen't have the side effects ritialin does. Cody is also no tegretol for seizures but this meds is also used as a behavior meds.

He takes 20 mg at breakfast and 5 mg at lunch of foclin.

His peditrician use to be head of a developmental pediatricts department at a large university hospital and has lots of experience with autism.
thanks bummer, well don't know if we are off to a good start or not, the bus forgot about him, they got here 10 minutes after school started, but he got on the bus ok.Hopefully they won't call me within the hour to come get him.
Our schools started yesterday.

My son was up and ready for school at 5:00 a.m. and had a huge melt down because the bus wasn't here when he thought they should be (5:30 a.m.)
and the melt down continued until he got on the bus until 7:30, fun morning!
oh yeah forgot to tell you this school mainstreams the special ed kids.Back home they always stayed in their own class with the exception of gym class.I can't see jonathan sitting still in a regular classroom for almost an hour.I think I am more nervous than he was.Think I will need some kind of drug before the day is out to calm me.Just Kidding!
Halftrack,

I wish you good luck with your child/ school. Hopefully he has a great teacher this yr who knows his sensitive and trigger areas....and will treat him with kid gloves and kindness, to get him over any humps or bumps he runs up against. I have a nephew who is autistic...and he thankfully had a fabulous teacher that gave him, and treated him as an individual. They got along fabuously! After a couple yrs....he got a new teacher who did not take the time the child needed , and was too impatient....and all HE^^ broke loose. Grandma and mom had to step in and raise a HUGE stink!
Special kids, need special needs, as individuals....not teated as some teachers think they should act and behave as the majority of the class! You do not want this kind of education for him, nor to be around this kind of person!
I pray that all goes well for him and you.

thanks lilly,I met with his teacher tuesday, she seemed really nice and kept telling me not to worry, that he will do just fine.Bummer has been a big help to me on giving out great advice with my son,I love my son but sure am glad school has started. His dad only gets him 4 days a month, his choice of course. So he has been with me almost 24/7 the whole summer.Took him to a psychologist the other day and he asked me if I ever considered a group home?Really Pi#### me off. Then he was more worried about my son messing with his high dollar venetian blinds.

Intergration into regular education is mandated under IDEA.

But intergration does not work for all.

IDEA stands for, Individual Disability Education Act, and with this the IEP is to be individualized.

The IEP is required to document the amount or percent of time spent in special education and the amount of time spent in regular education. Also it should list what classes are spent in regular education and what classes in special education.

If being in the regular education classroom for 1 hour at a time does not work then the IEP needs to be changed. The IEP is not written on stone and can be changed at any time.

THis being a new school I would be at the school monitoring how be is doing in the classroom setting.

One way to do this without stepping on toes is to be a volunteer at the school.

Remember you will get much future being a team member with an assertive attitude then an agressive attitude.

good advice bummer, the only thing about being at the school is that if he saw me he would want to go home.I hope to have a IEP soon. Thanks
I Hope All goes Well for Your Son Half, and things go Smoothly!!Wink
