It's that time of year, and the next two weeks will be busy.

All 3 of mine are enrolled in swine (pigs) and will show iin herdsmanship, and sell at the 4-H auction if their pigs make weight.

This week they practice on herding their pigs.

They are also enrolled in photography, arts & crafts, & foods.

For the foods project each have selected a receipe and will be baking (I believe all have selected different cookie receipes) in a couple of days.

Bummer Knees
way to go send me some cookies
would love to be there with you all it sounds so grand have fun and enjoy
We had kids in 4-H and also did swine. I use to have a blast doing that with the kids. We always loved the shows and the excitement of getting our hogs ready for showing. I use to wash them hogs down real good then I would get on my hands and knees to get their coat and those hams nice and shiney so they would make a pretty showing. Do y'all clip your hogs before showing? When we first started and knew nothing we didn't but then we started learning all the tricks to making them look real good for show. We also use to bred and raise them, God that was fun but alot of work. I always played the part of the vet when it came to deliveries and caring for the piglets with all their shots and clipping their teeth and such. I said halt, when it came to the castration part. I did not want to be anywhere around when it was time to do that. Good luck to your children that are participating and I hope y'all get plenty money for your stock. God bless and love ya!

Lots of Luck for the Little Ones at the Fair!! I Purchased a Friends Son's Pig One Year, He was a Very Nice Size, and Sold as the Second Highest Price!! It's Great for the Kids to be Involved in Such Activities, they Learn so Much, and get to See and Learn the Respect and Hard Work that the Older Farmers Talk about!!Smile
My son with autism started showing a pig the year he turned 7, he did a great job in the arena! His pig that year was 300 lbs. To make weight pigs must be between 220-300 lbs.

My son would sneak out of the house and go paly with his pig and feed it.
Were really not for sure what he was feeding his pig beside the grain!

This may be the last year we show pigs, I am not able to help with the animals, and with the oldest going to college and graduating from 4-H she won't be home to help out.

We are going to work on photography this afternoon and shop for supplies for baking.
Before the pigs were unloaded at the fair a vet examined the health of each pig, and testing was done if needed.

All of our pigs made weight and will be in the show tonight, and auction Wednesday night.

Been at the fair today, all the pens were cleaned while the pigs were given baths and gotten ready for the show tonight.

I am unable to do any of the physical work, but supervised the work today.

The number of swine entries in the fair are down by 50% this year, lots of empty pens. People just don't have the money to pay for the purchase of a pig, food, and other others required for the swine project.

My son has a habit of running off so I had to stay at his side to make him stay put at the fair.

Think I'll invest in some super glue.
Best of Luck, I Hope All Goes Well for Your Kids, and Remember to Rest!!Smile
The pigs were judged last night, and it was exciting!

My son got a red, his favorite color.

My daughter got a red, her favorite color, not.

And my niece got second blue, and was runner up for grandchampion!

Wednesday is the auction and we are finished with pigs for the year, yes!!!
it was exciting I bet.........the worst thing about this time of year is they have to sell them.....one year here they ran them thru the sell barn.......one would be "won" and he would right away put it back up under the oringal owner they were sold 10 or 15 times each it was nice to see.....I dont believe people understand how expensive it is for kids and their parents to have a pig in 4-H......your children are blessed.....by the way will they eat pork? It doesnt bother me now but as a kid I couldnt eat beef after we had feed and babied it then Daddy butcherd it.......I get around that by taking it to a butcher and getting back nicely wrapped white packages that in no way look like its oringal body
