Yesterday I had a dentist appointment for a cleaning. The girl asked me what was wrong seeing as I was in pain. I told her I had my operation on March 9th for my cervical spine. She asked me if they put any metal in me which I said yes. The hygienist wouldn't clean my teeth unless I took antibiotics before I came in. Who knew?? So when I see my pain management doctor next week I will either need a prescription for an antibiotic or a doctors release stating I don't need it. I was also told this is up to 6 months following an operation in which metal is inserted.
I remember following my first surgery that this never came up and I did tell them what I had done. Go figure
Be well everyone
Well, I knew that. In fact your Dentist can write the Script for you.
Now, I had been told that Pre-medication is a higher dose for 6 months, but, still must Pre-Medicate for life afterwards.
I have writen about this many times before. Just that I don't remember in who's Threads.
my Dentist takes special care of me when I go..he never hands me off to another hygenist ...while I no longer have to pre medicate as Bad boy said I do have to take antibiotics afterwards
Sorry guys but I'm not quite sure what you are referring to when you say pre medicate. If you are talking about taking your pain meds before you go then yes I do that also. Guess I'm a newby at this stuff :0(
Pre-Medicate means to fight off a possible infection before it might start. This is done with the use of antibiotics the Dentist can Prescribe for you. You would take them before and after the visit. Or in Jaynes case after the visit. Bacteria has a way of finding a path to Implants... A human mouth is loaded with Bacteria, that gets rinsed down our mouths and then into our body system.

Thanks for the explanation Bad Boy. I don't know why this wasn't followed after my first operation. Same dentist too.
Bad Boy
You posted about this subject on a thread I started after the knee replacement.
tpm
Due to the replacement I take antibiotics 1 hour before a dental appointment.
I am told I will need to continue this 2 yrs post surgery.
Am I correct on this Bad Boy?
I've had 2 surgeries since January and with both I took antibiotics the same as for a dental procedure.
Same here, I was told that I will always need to ask for the antibiotics to take prior to and after any dental procedure, for the rest of my life. I am always suprised when surgeons do not mention this to the patients.
OMG! I'm so glad someone posted this thread! About 5 years ago, I went to the dentist for a cleaning, I told them I had instruments in my neck, they said OK, we will not lay you down all the way. When I came back the following week for a filling...the nightmare began!
He gave me "centaness(sp?)" it suppose to be given in place of novocaine when you have instrumentation...OMG...I felt like I was going to pass out, I can feel my face go white, just down right sick...the dentist panicked, he said, "I have never seen someone react like this" I said call 911, he just stood there...I finally said, "Hurry up and do the dam tooth so I can go to the ER" I called Kaiser from the lobby, and they told me to go straight home and flush my system for the next hour which I did but I ended up in the ER.
I have not been back to the dentist since...just to darn scared! The ER doctor said I should have had antibiotics and been given novocaine...I have learned!
