Hi, I am currently working a reduced day with a lot of restrictions. My employer is pushing me into retiring this year (school year ends on June 30th). My position was eliminated again. I was offered a demotion, but it is very humiliating and I take daily harrassing comments from co-workers.

My question is, if I am on a reduced day, and I retire due to my health, am I eligible to apply for SSDI. I am 54 year olds.

Also, if I am able to get SSDI, do I have to take the mandatory "Medicare" after 2 years? If I do, I will lose my regular health insurance, which also covers my husband. My employer is going to continue my group health insurance until I am 65, or medicare eligible.

Thanks for any insights!

Once your job ends you may apply for SSDI. You can not be working when applying for SSDI.

After 2 years you are eligible for medicare, from my understanding medicare is your choice. I remember completing forms if I wanted to apply for medicare.

To be sure about this I would call the 800 number for Social Security Administration and ask them if medicare is mandatory or a matter of choice.
Chris,I just went thru this with my medicare I was forced to take both part A and part B and then champus picks up the rest.....part A is free and if I didnt take part B I would have lost champus completely....upset me greatly as my co payments were just 12 dollars a month and I go once a month for bloodwork now I pay 96 dollars a month for part B but no copays.....what can you do ? at least I have insurance
When I received my Medicare, I had the choice of keeping my own insurance or taking part B. I chose to take my own as long as my employer was footing the bill. Then when it ran out I contacted Medicare and they added part B. But I did have to have my employer sign a paper stating that they were no longer covering me and I had to send that to Medicare. Part A was mandatory, But you can call Medicare and they can give you the details. Good luck.

My own ins was primary and Medicare was secondary, untill I no longer had my own ins.
Medicare is an option.

because they figure if they don't need to pick-up a medical tab, that is just great. So, no Fear CC...
I alo use my husbands ins as primary and medicare as secondary
