As a woman working in a male dominated field I thought this was an interesting article. "We've come along way Baby"

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/29/opinio...llins.html
I saw this on the news. It was very interesting that these sort of situations are still occurring, but even I know that male nurses on the average make more than female nurses and male nurse (last I read) held about 3% of the positions. Nursing as a whole is prodominently women and we know as a whole that to increase our salaries we need more men in the field. This is sad, but it is true. Thanks for bring this issue up for discussion. Love Red
Way back when I was 20 I first started working in a factory, there was about 150 men and only about 10 or 15 women, with 5 of those women being secretaries. You were supposed to get raises on what your performance was, such as how many parts you ran, scrap rate, attitude etc.Well I was very competetive, wanting to beat all those guys I worked with, ran twice as many parts, working 12 hours a day and never missing work. The guys that were goofoffs got the same raises I did,I worked for a guy, my supervisor who thought all women were stupid and shouldn't be in factories so he gave a lot of the women the hardest jobs, so I worked harder, lifted more, to make a long story short,by the time I was almost 50 my body wore out, this is how I lost my job due to injuries over the last 5 years of employment, and all those goofoffs are still there. So Yeah for Obama for signing this law into effect.Halftrak
now to inforce it.....
Hopefully this will be inforced. I too have always worked in a male dominated fied. Several places that I worked, I was the only female in production. I felt that I had to prove myself more than the men. I was paid lower than men that I trained and mentored.

I was naive back then about being able to force the issue of discrimination. I had more experience than many new hires, but yet was paid less because of my gender. I have been a CNC Machinist, a Laser operator, Quality control inspector as well as head supervisor. I would do all the heavy lifting and work the long hours while my male co-workers would be helping each other. I can remember asking someone to help me lift a particularly heavy and awkuardly shaped part and was given the responce of " you took this job, you should be able to do it yourself". I'm hoping that things get turned around and women are paid what they are worth, just like the men that they work with. I have always felt that equal pay for equal work should be up held.

Sorry that I have gotten on a rant, but this thread has really hit home for me. I was injured at work in 06 and was only 43, but had been doing my line of work for 24 years. Now my body can't do the physically demanding jobs, only sedentary type things.

Take care,love

Like we've all said. We as women always had to work twice as hard as the men, to prove ourselves. I feel there were lots of times I was given a job that they wouldnt of given to a male to do by himself, just to try to get me to quit. I was/am in a union, so pay was never an issue. There were times though that I was not offered the opportunity to work overtime for extra money, because I was married at the time and since my husband worked they said I didnt need the extra money.

Another short story...LOL I was working on a job and my ex-husband was on that job also. I told my foreman that I wanted to quit, and to get my check at the end of shift. My General Foreman went to my husband and told him that I wanted to quit, what shoud he do. My husband replied, "Get her money". If it was reversed, do you think they would of asked my permission for my husband to quit? I dont think so..LOL
Well I am a firm believer "and I tell my wife this all the time" God put women on earth as a gift to man. In doing so man has been in charge and should always be. If a woman wants to work she still has her duties at home like wash dishes, cook, clean, wash clothes you get my picture. So really man deserves more pay.
Come on!!!!!!!!!! No responses?
well Bronco I am gonna agree with you...God give you fellas a tremendous gift..Cuz if you men had to pay us women union wages for what we do you sure as hell couldnt afford us.....and if you were my husband you would have been handed your balls on a paper plate for that remark
Well Jayne of all I figured you to be the first. Did I get you blood boiling?
