Smile Just heard from our traveler, She is in Effingham Illinois, stoped for the nite. She said to tell you all hello and say she sure misses not being able to get on her computer.

We are trying to re-route her down to I-40 as she is afraid that when she gets to Denver she may run into bad weather and the passes may be closed.
So I am giving her directions to Oklahoma City where she can pick up I-40 without having to backtrack. She will have to go around or through St Louis, as there is no other way as so many of the roads are closed, and road construction around Little Rock if she heads that way.

I went to Map Quest, Unless anyone else has any ideas. RN vic may have a better way as she is in that area, and knows the roads.

I told Vickie I would get back to her this evening with the directions at 7 pm our time,

If anyone wants to talk to her PM me and I will give you the motel and room number..........
If her route takes her near Wichita, KS, I would love to see her.

I also have an extra bedroom.
I find that checking the traffic cameras in major cities to be a big help in determining weather conditions and road closures. most state traffic departs have websites with updated information on any problems.
here's denver traffic cam:
http://www.denvergov.org/apps/traffic/tr...c=I-70SHER

for general traffic information In and around denver

I suspect there is similar information for Ok city and st. Louis and all major cities west
Thanks people, I talked to Vickie and she has decided , just in case the weather takes a turn to go the southern route, also she is going to detour to Vegas for a day or two. Sounds like fun.................
Bummer she will be taking I-44 from St Louis to Oklahoma City. How far is that from you?
That would be up around Kansas CIty.

It is not in my area, maybe others on the forum live nearby.
I am about 1.5 hours south of I-40 where it meets I-44 in OKC. The only problem if she takes I-44 is that it is a toll road. It costs us $8.00 in tolls round trip when we go there.

She could catch highway 287 out of Wichita Falls and it would connect back in to I-40 around Amarillo, TX. If my figures are right, it's about 5 miles difference if she came down here or went across the rest of Oklahoma to the panhandle of TX across I-40. But that would, of course, be up to Vickie. We could save her the cost of a motel, as well as a couple of meals. And she is more than welcome here..we have plenty of room When I filled up my tank Tuesday at Sam's Club, gas was at $1.91 a gallon.

I was wondering what part of Vegas she plans on going to. The mapquest and yahoomaps both take her to what they call "old Vegas" through the bad traffic areas on the highway. I can get her to that part of town, or any other part a lot easier than putting her in to what is called the "spaghetti bowl". After all, I did live there for over 7 years.

Hope that Vickie will see this and decide to drop down this way..or maybe spend the night in OK City and I could drive up there and meet her. It all depends on what day and time she will be in this area I guess.

Hi all...you know Vickie is not driving alot each day due to her pain. She is going to take forever to get to California. Her daughter lives in the northern part of California just below the Oregon California Border. Del and I have driven many times from NJ to Oregon...we lived in the southern part of Oregon.... and I believe she would not have run into a lot of snow on I80. I80 is my our experience plowed good so even if snow is on the side, it is safe on the road. Which way is she heading today. Her daughter must be going nuts waiting for her to get there. Her family is realy worried about her making this trip.... if you hear from her, ask her to give me a call from her next hotel...she can call me collect. On the other hand, this could be quite an adventure for her driving all over and getting to meet each of us. Love Red
If I had the money I would meet her in Vegas but I just can't afford it right now. Thanks to everyone for giving us updates on her trip. I am happy to hear she is safe and taking it slow.
Red, Vickie is enjoying herself. She talks to her daughter just about every nite when she stops. Her daughter said she did not care if it took her 2 weeks to drive, as long as she is safe.

Being she wanted to go into Vegas for a couple of days she decided to take I-40.

Angel, Vickie has been to Vegas before and she did live in California. She has all her furniture in storage there.. But ya never know she may change her mind. She is aware of the tolls...
