Hi, All.
I thought I just ask if someone knows what to do if running into a pack of coyotes? I walk with my dog every day and seen one or two coyotes occasionally, but lately I hear and see them pretty much every day. They are in packs and howl and seems to be getting closer to the trail where I walk. I have a big dog, he is a golden retriever about 100 lbs, but he is old, almost 10 years old. Would coyotes attack him? Or me? I am not a big person, just 5'1 and 125lbs, would they see me as pray? I heard they kill cats and small dogs, sometimes they even steal children.
Any advice?

Call your State Local Wild Life District about the problem, and also call your Local Police on what can be done. Some States offer a Bounty for coyotes. But it isn't all that much.
here they are shot as cattle people hate em....I have never had any bother my chickens but I have large dogs and a loaded shotgun
Stay away from the area......If there are one or two they usually won't bother you, but in a pack they can and will attack. Do call your Game Com. and tell them. In PA the season for them is always open. If you know a hunter they may be willing to shoot them. If you still want to walk in the area carry a gun with you at all times.....
Thanks for the advice. I think I will take a different route from now on No wonder I see less people on this trail lately. And the scary part is, I also take my two little grandkids with me sometimes. Yesterday they made me run as they were getting really close to the trail and I just wanted to get out from the woods fast. Will not take more chances with them, I don't like them especially when they howl and yip. I will also report them to the police as the wildlife agency here is a joke. I called them in the past several times about coyote problems in other areas and they just said, nobody else reported seeing them, so they did nothing.
Backache is Absolutely Correct, 1 or 2 May Leave You and Your Dog alone, but when they Start to Pack-Up, they are on the Prowl to Feed! And Yes, they will Attack Your Dog, and You if there is enough of them. I have Hunted around them My Entire Life, and they are a Very Wily and Wise Breed. They are Mostly Cowards Alone Unless Attacked, but in Packs they can be Viscous!!! I would Strongly Suggest that You Stay away from the Area, and make Sure Your Game Commission is Made Aware of where You have Noticed them Packing Up! You can Never be too Careful when a Pack is Concerned!!
coyotes must not be well fed in your area some here are very large40 to 50 lbs or more
DH, I hope they were coyotes and not wolves. I heard wolves re-appeared in Eastern Washington, but I live in Western Washington. Besides hearing the pack the third time last evening, I seen one of them two days ago in the evening just before dark before he ran into the woods. He was same color as my golden retriever and almost as big..my dog is huge, almost 100 lbs. The pack whatever they were scared me yesterday because one of them , who was calling to the rest, was really close to the trail and the rest of the pack kept answering by howling and sort of like barking and I could hear them getting closer. Usually there are some people on the trail, but not in the past few days, not sure why. This trail goes around a lake which is fenced due to city's water supply is in there and behind the fence there are lots of deer, so maybe coyotes are trying to get to them. I will call tomorrow the Fish and Wildlife and maybe they can tell me more. I heard, coyotes attacked two women and a child recently in a busy city park, they are getting almost unafraid of people.
I am a little mad because I like that trail, I can let my dog loose and just enjoy the quiet. Now I am afraid to use it.

Most sites use the weight to differentiate but most coyotes are about the size (height wise) as a lab, 15-20" at the shoulder, whereas the wolves I've seen are more along the size of a bullmastiff or a great dane, 26-38" at the shoulder. Coyotes have always looked 'scrawnier' to me than wolves, probably because wolves have a thick undercoat that makes them look fluffier.
