I applied for SSDI and I've had an interview with a caseworker and last Tuesday they had me see a psychiatrist. (I can't spell.)
The paperwork that I got about the appointment didn't say anything about it being a mental evaluation. The psyciatrist told me that it was to evaluate my ability to handle money. I've told others this and they seem to think it is because I'm going to be getting my back pay from SS and it'll be for a little over 2 years. What do you guys think?
I'm not trying to get money for not doing anything, except to help with bills that I can't pay on my $400 a month worker's comp (which is only 20% of my pay). I would gladdly go to work every day for the rest of my life than have to live with the pain that I go through daily. I'm just confused as to why they would send me for a psyciatric evaluation. Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks alot!!
Marcia
The exam was to see what your mental ability was. It really didn't have anything to do with handeling money. There are a lot of people that have a mental disorder. Anything from depression to post traumatic stress disorder.
If you think about it, when you handle money, you have to be able to count. You have to be able to reason rationally. I think that is what they were looking for during the exam.

the mental evaluation is standard for ssd. I too applied for ssd had a medical evaluation and a mental evaluation. Was denied ssd but atty has told me not to worry most cases get denied at this stage so get ready for a long appeal process. The mental evaluation is to decide whether any depression severe enough to interfere with daily living.
maybe maybe not.....I was a provider for a man that mentally could not be responsiable for handeling his own money....He could drive,keep house.cook any and all of these things but was easily taken advantage of from someone (his brother and sister)asking him to borrow money (and never paying it back)to seeing a new truck and saying he needed it and going to the dealer and trying to buy it......it was a constant battle of which I am glad to be out of.....many mental SSDI people have "providers" that the check goes into a bank in the providers name for "who ever" then checks are written for bills and groceries and spending money is given weekly if any is left...this is mostly for their money safety.....the client cannot write checks on their own account only the provider can....and the provider must write a check for EVERTHING to keep a papertrail for the SS dept if they are ask to see the account......
Good point, Jayne. I don't agree that a mental eval is standard in all SSD cases. My husband never had one and was approved for it solely on physical disability.

Note;
If a family member stuck their nose in, and told SSDI you can't handle money, then this could be the reason also.....

Thanks alot for the responses! I appreciate you all taking your time to help me out. I can see why they would want to see how my mental state is, uh..I'm in constant pain, that is a bit depressing.

Did you ever get your prescription problem solved? And have you now been getting your medication?
It still takes the adjustor more than a week to approve any script, including refills. She certainly likes to be a pain and take her time. I suppose that is her right though, I am at the mercy of the insurance company. yay.
