SC Commission's New Executive Director Outlines Changes

Columbia, SC (CompNewsNetwork) - Gary M. Cannon has been named the Executive Director of the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Commission. He assumed the position March 16, 2009. The day-to-day administration and operation of the Commission is the responsibility of the executive director who is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of seven commissioners acting in their capacity as the board of directors of the agency.

Cannon brings experience in both public management and governmental relations to the Commission. Previously serving as Director of Intergovernmental Relations for the Municipal Association of South Carolina, he provided technical assistance to municipal governments in the areas of policies, procedures and administration, financial administration, budgeting, human resource management, governance, and compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. He has served as Director of Fund and Membership Development, International City/County Management Association and as the City Manager for both Beaufort and Camden, South Carolina. "We are pleased to have Gary join us as Executive Director. The Commission was impressed with Gary's qualifications and experience. We look forward to working with him," says Andrea Roche, Chairman.

The Commission has several projects underway that will substantially enrich the way the agency operates including: implementing a new document management system, converting manual processing procedures to electronic filing and image based processes and relocating to 1333 Main Street. Mr. Cannon sees these challenging projects as examples of the Commission's commitment to continuous improvement in serving its constituents. "This is an exciting time to be working with the Worker's Compensation Commission and to be involved in the opportunities that lie ahead. I look forward to working with the Commissioners and capable staff as we collectively strive to serve employers, employees and our State in the moist effective and efficient manner possible," says Cannon.

The Commission welcomes the wealth of professional and educational experience that Mr. Cannon possesses. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned Bachelor of Political Science and Master of Public Administration degrees. He is a member of numerous civic and professional organizations and is a graduate of the Senior Executive Institute of the University of Virginia, the South Carolina Executive Institute, and Leadership South Carolina.
