Top 12 Best Practices for General Managers

Throughout the workers’  compensation process it is best for every employee or outside consultant to understand exactly what is expected of him or her. Knowing your role in the event of an injury helps contain costs.

The general manager  must be aware of the best practices for his or her position to ensure the event will be handled smoothly from start to finish.  Handing them a clear document with the direct wording: “This is What We Want Our General Managers To Do” leaves no room for debate.

Include among the general managers’ responsibilities:

1.   Describe  to staff the cost of workers’ comp and the importance of the program to the company.

2.   Describe  how to take an injured employee to the doctor, clinic or hospital and designate a person to take said employee if the general manager is unable to do so.

3.   Explain  the wallet card and employee brochure.

4.   Tell  what to ask during the post accident interview.

5.   Know  what to do during the first-day phone call.

6.   Know  how to host weekly meetings on the new workers’ compensation program.

7.   Be able  to answer the basic questions an injured employee will have about workers’ compensation.

8.   Be familiar  with the forms necessary to complete the workers’ compensation process.

9.   Explain  the company’s policy of transitional duty to not only the injured employee but also to co-workers.

10. Monitor  the injured employee during his or her transitional duties to be sure he or she is not exceeding limitations. (workersxzcompxzkit)

11. Recognize  the indicators of fraud and malingering and identify who the manager should notify in these cases.

12.  Accurately  document ALL employee communications.
